What an ITIN is, and how to get one without mailing a passport
An ITIN is a nine-digit IRS tax-processing number for people who need a U.S. taxpayer identification number but are not eligible for a Social Security number. You apply on IRS Form W-7; the reason most people want to avoid mailing an original passport is that the IRS holds submitted documents while it processes the application.
- What it is — a nine-digit IRS number for federal tax reporting, issued to those not eligible for an SSN.
- Who needs one — non-U.S. founders, and immigrants who have a U.S. tax filing or reporting requirement without an SSN.
- What it costs — the IRS charges nothing to issue an ITIN; you pay a $191 service fee, refunded in full if the IRS does not issue it.
- Best order — get your EIN first, then add the ITIN so the application reflects your business.
- Your passport — handled through a compliant process; you do not mail your original passport to the IRS.
ITIN — definitions
- ITIN
- Individual Taxpayer Identification Number — a nine-digit number the IRS issues to individuals who must have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to get, a Social Security number.
- Form W-7
- The IRS application used to apply for a new ITIN or to renew an existing one, filed with proof of identity and foreign status.
- Acceptance Agent / CAA
- A person or entity the IRS authorizes to help applicants get an ITIN. A Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) can authenticate identity documents so certain applicants do not mail originals to the IRS.
- Form W-7 (COA)

Apply for ITIN number: Form W-7 and documents
To apply for ITIN number processing, you file the IRS ITIN application on IRS Form W-7 — the ITIN application form, or itin form, commonly searched without the hyphen as the W7 form or the W7 form for ITIN — together with documents that prove your identity and foreign status, most often a passport. The IRS ITIN number that results is used for federal tax reporting only. An ITIN number for immigrants and non-U.S. founders exists for a single reason: to meet a U.S. tax filing or reporting requirement when a Social Security number is not available.
The W-7 form asks for the reason you are applying, your identifying information, and the documents submitted; the W-7 instructions (W7 instructions) list exactly which documents the IRS accepts and how each must be presented, and a Certifying Acceptance Agent attaches a Form W-7 (COA), the W7 COA, to certify it reviewed your originals. Getting the reason box and the identification right is what keeps an application from being rejected — one of the most common ways ITIN applications are delayed.
Without mailing your passport: your options
The IRS holds documents while it processes a Form W-7, so mailing an original passport means being without it for weeks. There are three ways to avoid that. First, an IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent can authenticate identity documents and attach a Form W-7 (COA), so originals stay with you. Second, you can submit certified copies issued by the agency that produced the document — for a passport, your country’s issuing authority. Third, you can present documents in person at a designated IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center by appointment.
Wyoming Registered Agent Prime LLC prepares your Form W-7 and confirms the supporting documents so your application moves through a compliant, no-original-passport-mailed process, and if the IRS does not issue your ITIN for any reason, you receive a 100% refund. You start your itin application online through your account and manage your itin number online with us; the IRS itself has no online ITIN application, so the paperwork is prepared correctly and submitted the way the IRS requires.

ITIN renewal and expiration
An ITIN expires if it is not used on a U.S. federal tax return for three consecutive years — it lapses on December 31 after that third year. An ITIN renewal uses the same Form W-7: you check “Renew an existing ITIN,” give the reason that applies, and enter your existing number so the IRS can match it. The ITIN renewal form is therefore the W-7 itself, not a separate document, and a tax return is not required to renew unless you are a spouse or dependent claiming an allowable benefit. If you have since received a Social Security number, do not renew the ITIN — the SSN replaces it.
ITIN — frequently asked questions
How to apply for ITIN number, and how to apply for ITIN?
You apply for an ITIN number by completing IRS Form W-7 and submitting it with documents proving your identity and foreign status. Form W-7 is filed by mail to the IRS ITIN Operation, in person at a designated IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center by appointment, or through an IRS acceptance agent. Non-residents and foreign founders use the same Form W-7; our service prepares it so it is complete before it is submitted.
Can I apply for an ITIN without a tax return?
Usually Form W-7 is attached to a federal tax return, but there are exceptions. Certain applicants — including partners in a U.S. partnership or LLC, people subject to third-party withholding, and those claiming a tax-treaty benefit — can apply under an exception without attaching a return. Many non-U.S. LLC owners qualify this way; how to apply for itin without tax return is simply to file under the correct exception, which is why that exception has to be identified before filing.
How do I get an ITIN for a child or dependent?
Each applicant, including a child or dependent, needs their own Form W-7. Dependents have stricter document rules: an acceptance agent can authenticate a dependent’s passport and civil birth certificate, but any other supporting documents must be sent to the IRS. Because dependent applications are rejected most often for document errors, the paperwork is worth getting right the first time.
How to get ITIN number for non resident applicants?
A non-resident applies with Form W-7 and documents proving identity and foreign status, most commonly a passport. You do not need to be in the United States — the application can be filed from abroad, though the IRS notes overseas applications can take longer. Our service is built for non-U.S. founders getting an ITIN number for a U.S. business.
Where can I get an ITIN number?
You can get an ITIN number three ways: by mailing Form W-7 and your documents to the IRS ITIN Operation in Austin, Texas; in person at a designated IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center by appointment (call 844-545-5640); or through an IRS acceptance agent. There is no walk-in “ITIN office” — the in-person route is the appointment-based Taxpayer Assistance Center.
How much does it cost to get an ITIN number?
The IRS does not charge a fee to file Form W-7 or to issue an ITIN — the application itself is free. What you pay for is preparation and, where used, an acceptance agent’s certification. Our ITIN service is $191, all-inclusive, and if the IRS does not issue your ITIN for any reason, you receive a 100% refund.
How do I know if my ITIN is expired, and how do I check my status?
If your ITIN was not used on a U.S. federal tax return for three consecutive years, it expired on December 31 after that third year of non-use. There is no public itin number lookup and no separate online tracker for a pending application, so how to check my itin status online comes down to your IRS Online Account, where you can check your ITIN and tax records. The IRS notifies you by mail — a CP565 notice means your ITIN was assigned, CP566 means more information is needed, and CP567 means the application was rejected.
How to fill out a W-7 form for renewal?
You renew with the same Form W-7. To fill out a W-7 form for renewal, check “Renew an existing ITIN” in the top-right application-type box, select the reason that applies to you, and enter your existing ITIN on line 6f so the IRS can match it. A tax return is not required for a renewal unless you are a spouse or dependent applying for an allowable tax benefit.
Can I file Form W-7 online?
No. Form W-7 cannot be e-filed on its own. It is submitted on paper — by mail with your federal return, in person at a designated IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center, or through an acceptance agent who can authenticate your documents so you do not have to mail your originals.
Can I work legally with an ITIN?
No. An ITIN is for federal tax reporting only. In the IRS’s words, an ITIN “does not authorize work in the U.S.,” and it does not change your immigration status or make you eligible for Social Security benefits. It exists so people who are not eligible for a Social Security number can still meet a U.S. tax filing or reporting requirement.
Can I get a tax refund with an ITIN number?
Filing with an ITIN number lets you file a U.S. federal tax return, which can produce a refund if you overpaid or qualify for certain credits — for example, the Child Tax Credit for an eligible child. One credit you cannot claim with an ITIN is the Earned Income Tax Credit, which requires a Social Security number.
Can I get an ITIN regardless of immigration status?
Yes. The IRS issues ITINs regardless of immigration status, because both resident and nonresident aliens may have a U.S. filing or reporting requirement. Eligibility turns on whether you need a U.S. taxpayer identification number and are not eligible for an SSN — not on immigration status. An ITIN is strictly a tax-processing number: it does not grant legal immigration status or authorize work.
